Xeomin®

Xeomin® for Wrinkles

At California Skin Institute we offer a variety of treatment options for muscle-induced wrinkles, with Xeomin® being a just one of the choices for addressing instances of heavy wrinkles and frown lines. The treatment, however, has several other uses and has been applied by physicians for treatment of neck problems caused by cervical dystonia and eyelid twitching/spasm issues. The doctors at California Skin Institute have significant experience with this often-misunderstood procedure, we can help you access whether this treatment is the best option in your specific situation, and perform it virtually painlessly for those patients who are good candidates for treatment.

What is Xeomin®?

Xeomin® is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles, and works very much like Botox®, by temporarily reducing or eliminating muscle contractions in the area.

The difference between Botox vs. Xeomin lies in the type of botulinum toxin A used. Whereas Botox® uses onabotulinumtoxinA, Xeomin utilizes a slightly different version called incobotulinumtoxinA.

Both treatments are FDA approved for treatment of frown lines and work by relaxing the treated muscles.

How Xeomin® Works

Much like Botox®, Xeomin® relies on botulinum toxin to temporarily relax facial muscles by preventing contraction of muscle fibers. Without muscle contraction certain wrinkles, like frown lines and forehead wrinkles, can be significantly reduced, since they are caused by muscle movements, and not just the natural aging of the skin.

At California Skin Institute, our doctors typically complete the procedure in 10-20 minutes, and you are able to continue about your day uninterrupted. We use specialized injection techniques and needles to maximize localization of the injections, to ensure that the right muscles are being temporarily relaxed.

Our skin care specialists also take significant care to ensure that you are left with a natural appearance, rather than the “plastic” look that is often created by inexperienced professionals.

What Xeomin® Treats

Xeomin’s ability to limit muscle contractions has opened many avenues for the use of this treatment. For example, this injectable has been used to:

  • Treat abnormal spasm of the eyelids in adults who have had prior treatment with onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox®), by relaxing the facial muscles that control the eyelids.
  • Temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults. Much like Botox®, Xeomin® can temporarily limit movement in certain muscles, thus reducing the appearance of frown lines and other heavy wrinkles.
  • Treat cervical dystonia (CD) in adults. With cervical dystonia, neck muscles contract involuntarily, often affecting head position and causing great pain to the sufferer. Injection treatment can relax these muscles, giving the patient temporary relief

How Long Does Xeomin® Last?

The improvements from a typical injection tend to last several months, which of course heavily depends on the patient’s individual chemistry and metabolism rates. However, keep in mind that Xeomin® treatments are likely a better solution for ongoing facial skin treatment.

This is different from dermal fillers like Belotero Balance® or Perlane®, which tend to show more immediate improvements by increasing volume under the skin.

What to Expect During Treatment

During treatment, your California Skin Institute provider will use a small needle to inject Xeomin® into the treatment area. Typically, several small injections are made, to distribute the treatment more evenly and to achieve improvements that look natural.

Does Xeomin® Hurt?

California Skin Institute providers use a numbing cream and small needles to ensure that injections are comfortable and virtually painless for our patients.
