Most people are born with small areas of discolored skin, birthmarks known as MOLES, which are malformations of pigment cells. Strawberry marks are bright red, spongy and protuberant; PORT-WINE STAINS are purple-red, flat and often cover large areas. True strawberry HEMANGIOMAS all clear by age 7, although they many leave an unsightly scar. Port-wine stains never clear.
Sometimes port-wine stains are associated with abnormalities in the blood vessels of the brain, a problem called Sturge-Weber Syndrome. Unattractive moles can be removed in late childhood through adulthood by our physicians.
