DermaSweep™
California Skin Institute offers a variety of treatment options for hyperpigmentation, wrinkles and aging skin, including the DermaSweep™ microdermabrasion procedure. This treatment option is one of the newer technological advances in professional skin exfoliation, and gives our medical providers many options to treat many different skin types. DermaSweep™ procedures are performed professionally by our aestheticians who have deep experience with this technology and have used it to help many patients successfully treat scars, dull skin, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.
How DermaSweep™ Works
DermaSweep™ is a form of microdermabrasion that is performed without the use of crystals. Traditional microdermabrasion techniques use crystals that hit the skin with high velocity to remove damaged and dying skin cells. DermaSweep™, on the other hand, uses several different attachments that gently scrape the skin with specialized bristles.
One of the advantages of DermaSweep™ over traditional microdermabrasion is that California Skin Institute providers have several bristle attachments to choose from. They can select a more coarse set of bristles to treat very rough areas of the skin, while using gentler bristles to treat the delicate areas around the eyes.
In fact, because DermaSweep™ microdermabrasion does not use crystals, it is more effective for treating this part of the face. Because there is no chance of crystals getting into your eyes, the provider can perform this procedure closer to the eyelids with greater accuracy.
However, this does not mean that there is no place for traditional microdermabrasion in your treatment. In some cases, your provider may use crystal microdermabrasion for an area of skin that has very rough texture. This is more common for patients who have never had this type of exfoliation, and may need traditional microdermabrasion before progressing to DermaSweep™ treatments.
What Does DermaSweep™ Feel Like?
DermaSweep™ feels quite gentle on the skin and was designed to remove only the upper-most layers that contain damaged or dying cells. As such, this microdermabrasion procedure is minimally-invasive and does not require any local anesthetics or numbing agents, in most cases. Most California Skin Institute clients describe the feeling of this treatment as mild plucking or scrubbing.
Throughout the entire procedure, the DermaSweep™ device is also set at a light vacuum to pull up any dead skin cells as they become dislodged. This helps prevent the cells from falling into the pores and creating clogs that may lead to comedones or acne. However, the vacuuming force is very light and does not create significant pull on the skin or cause broken capillaries.
What does DermaSweep™ Treat?
DermaSweep™ microdermabrasion is used to treat a number of skin problems, including hyperpigmentation, scarring and blotchy skin. The idea behind this procedure is to aid the natural cell shedding process by manually removing dead and damaged skin cells from the surface. This stimulates new skin cells to grow faster.
However, because this microdermabrasion is less drastic than strong chemical peels, it will require more sessions to see the best outcomes. For example, whereas someone who gets a TCA Peel may see significant improvement after just one treatment, multiple DermaSweep™ treatments may be needed to show optimal outcomes.
There is a direct tradeoff between the number of treatments and healing times, however. For example, whereas a strong chemical peel typically requires several weeks to heal and will create strong flaking and crusting of the skin, a DermaSweep™ typically has milder side effects and requires no time off.
DermaSweep™ Results
If you have never had microdermabrasion before, you will need several initial treatments, spaced several weeks apart – the specific timeframes and number of treatments varying depending on your unique situation. Thereafter, upkeep treatments can be performed to maintain the radiant appearance of the skin. These can also be alternated with chemical peels. For example, some California Skin Institute clients choose to get a DermaSweep™ treatment one month, and a Glycolic acid peel the next.
