How to Avoid Skin Cancer

MAY IS SKIN CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Throughout our lives we are exposed to harmful ultraviolet radiation emitted from the sun. This sun exposure can result in the development of skin cancer. Studies estimate that one in every five Americans will develop skin cancer during their lives. While this is a worrisome statistic, it is also true that when detected early, skin cancer has a 98% cure rate. Proactive sun protection and avoidance are essential to reducing your risk of developing skin cancer. The keys to protecting your skin are:*

Avoidance: Decrease exposure to direct sunlight especially between 10am and 2pm, when the sun is the strongest.*

Protection: When outside wear protective clothing (available with SPF) such as long pants, long sleeved shirts, and hats that cover your neck and ears.*

Sunscreen: Apply generous amounts of broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 40 or higher. Reapply often and at least every two hours while exposed to direct sun.*

Avoid tanning beds: Tanning beds expose you to high amounts of UV radiation, which can cause cancer and wrinkling.*

Risk: Patients who have had a skin cancer are at higher risk for developing additional skin cancers.* These patients need to be examined at least once a year.* Patients with lighter skin and those who have a history of sunburns are at greater risk for developing skin cancer.*

The prevalence of skin cancer continues to increase. Most skin cancers can be treated yet in some cases they can be very serious and even fatal. Early detection and treatment will help minimize your overall risk.* Self inspection of your skin is important.* Any new skin growths or changes in your existing skin should be evaluated at your dermatology office.* At the California Skin Institute our experts specialize in the detection and treatment of skin cancer.*
