Why Does Your Dermatologist Look at Your Nails?

By Todd S. Anhalt, MD, FACP, FAAD (California Skin Institute-Los Altos)

nailsYour dermatologist is an expert at evaluating and treating nail disease on both fingers and toes.* While not commonly appreciated, nails can tell us a great deal about the general health of the patient, or even help diagnose skin diseases and underlying systemic diseases.* Nail changes may point to a general group of conditions associated with nail disease.* Even emotional or psychological conditions may be reflected in the appearance of the nails, as can the effects of certain medications and nail products themselves.*

Examples of conditions where nail abnormalities are actually part of the patient’s skin disease spectrum, include common diseases such as psoriasis.*

Many underlying systemic diseases are also associated with abnormal nail changes.* Kidney disease, anemia, underlying infections and certain cancers can be associated with specific nail changes.* Even emotional and psychological conditions can slow nail growth and produce lines across the nail plates.* It is not uncommon for patients to be allergic to certain nail products such as nail polish, which may cause breakdown of the nails or irritation of the surrounding skin.* Malignant melanoma may start under the nail or at the matrix where nail is produced.* For these reasons, any dark discoloration under or around the nail should be evaluated by your dermatologist in a timely fashion.* Nail fungus is very common and dermatologists have a number of safe treatments for nail infections including new topical medicines, safe oral antifungals and specialized nail laser therapy.* Don’t disregard the health of your nails, and come visit your dermatologist with the know-how to diagnose and treat you.*

dr.anhaltDr. Anhalt is a board certified dermatologist in practice for the past 20 years and joined California Skin Institute in January 2009. He received his M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He then completed a residency in internal medicine at Cornell and became board certified in internal medicine. He then completed residency training in dermatology at Stanford University. The combined training in internal medicine and dermatology provides the foundation for his expertise in skin disease and broad understanding of how the skin reacts to internal disease.*
He is a Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Stanford Dermatology and Chief of Dermatologic Surgery at the Stanford VA Medical Center in Palo Alto. He devotes approximately 20% of his time to teaching residents and medical students at Stanford Medical Center. He also lectures nationally and internationally on the diagnosis and treatment of various skin diseases.
