Some Skin Conditions are More Common than You Think

Posted on: February 1st, 2016 by csiaccess

Here at California Skin Institute we help many patients treat a variety of skin issues, ranging from life threatening problems, like skin cancer, to more common skin conditions like rosacea and hyperpigmentation.* We love this work, because we get to help people every single day to look and feel their best.*

It’s one of the reasons we are so selective about the providers we invite to join our team and why we invest so much effort into creating informative articles and educational seminars. For all of us here at California Skin Institute, helping patients improve the look and feel of their skin isn’t just our job, it’s our passion.

In this installment of common skin conditions, we’ll touch on two skin issues, Keratosis Pilaris and Dandruff. These skin conditions are quite common and can affect almost anyone. But the good news is that there are many options to treat these issues, and many solutions are non-invasive!*

Are those bumps Keratosis Pilaris?

This skin condition manifests in the form of tiny bumps that typically appear on the upper arms, but can also show up on the thighs and face.

Patients often confuse these small bumps for little pimples. It’s an easy mistake to make, because the bumps can resemble acne to the untrained eye. However, Keratosis Pilaris is actually caused by the accumulation of dead skin cells inside hair follicles, thus creating the little bumps on the skin.

Those who struggle with Keratosis Pilaris often notice that the symptoms of this skin condition become less pronounced during the summer months.* In the winter, when the air is drier, the bumps tend to return with a vengeance.*

The good news is that Keratosis Pilaris can be addressed with non-invasive treatments, including topical creams and physical exfoliation.*

  • AHA Creams: In many patients, this skin condition responds well to alpha hydroxy acid treatments, like a glycolic acid cream.* The acid provides a gentle exfoliation of the skin, and helps break down the clusters of dead skin cells.* This doesn’t just reduce the symptoms of Keratosis Pilaris, but promotes pore health and can improve skin texture and reduce mild hyperpigmentation with regular use.*
  • Physical Exfoliation: In addition to using a glycolic acid cream, this skin condition can also be improved with regular use of gentle at-home exfoliators, like the Clarisonic brush.* This brush is designed with small bristles that gently scrub the skin to dislodge dirt and dead skin cells.* Regular use of this brush can decrease the bumps associated with Keratosis Pilaris.*

What’s Causing that Dandruff?

Another common skin condition that can cause frustration is Dandruff. We all get a few flakes here and there, but sometimes the flaking can become excessive and lead to embarrassment and self consciousness.

One of the most common causes of Dandruff is seborrheic dermatitis. It typically appears as scaly patches of skin on the head and scalp that can itch. Another cause that can be confused with seborrheic dermatitis is psoriasis. If psoriatic lesions appear on the scalp, they can also cause excessive flaking of the skin.

For patients struggling with Dandruff caused by seborrheic dermatitis, some of the possible treatment options include*:

  • Medicated Shampoos: There are a number of prescription and over the counter shampoos that your California Skin Institute provider may recommend.* These are often quite effective, and can provide significant relief.*
  • Changing Habits: Another step your provider may suggest is to ensure that your hair and scalp is dry before you put it up, or before going to sleep.*

If the Dandruff is caused by psoriasis, additional treatments and medications may be needed to get the skin condition under control.*

Speak to a Specialist

It’s important to note that only a trained dermatologist should diagnose conditions like Keratosis Pilaris and causes of Dandruff.*

Some individuals attempt to self-diagnose skin conditions using online resources with photos – but end up struggling for years without finding a cure.* The reason for this is that many common skin conditions look the same to the untrained eye.*

If you’re struggling from any skin conditions, please set up an appointment with one of our expert dermatologists.* Our providers will take the time to listen to your concerns, answer your questions, and will use their expertise to diagnose your condition and find the appropriate treatment option.*
