California Skin Institute providers offer a number of minimally-invasive face lifting and contouring procedures, including NovaThreads. This procedure relies on the use of absorbable PDO sutures to instantly lift the skin, to create a younger appearance. Further, as NovaThreads sutures are dissolved over the coming months, the body grows collagen in the area – a process that provides a skin firming and lifting effect.

What is NovaThreads?
The idea behind NovaThreads is to place a thin suture under the skin in a way that produces a lifting effect and stimulates the body’s natural repair processes to build more collagen. The sutures are made from polydioxanone, a flexible, absorbable material that is widely used in surgical applications and is considered to be very safe for implanting under the skin.
NovaThreads can be implanted in two ways; a “mesh” structure and a lifting approach.
For the mesh structure, your California Skin Institute provider will implant several threads that cross each other perpendicularly, much like a hash tag sign (#). This is not meant to provide an immediate lifting effect, but rather to stimulate the growth of collagen in the area to produce long term skin tightening.
For a more immediate effect, your provider can place individual NovaThreads sutures in a way that pulls the tissues upward and creates contour. In order to keep them in place, the sutures are designed with tiny, flexible barbs that latch on to the tissues as they are placed under the skin and keep the tissues from migrating back to the original position. This approach can be used to give the face a more lifted look, reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds, and even provide more contour to the neck.
What NovaThreads Treats
NovaThreads can be used to address a number of cosmetic issues, including the loss of contour in the face and neck. The central goal of the lifting procedure is to offset the age-related downward migration of tissues to give the patient a more youthful appearance.
How Long Does NovaThreads Last?
Results from NovaThreads last for approximately 6 months. Patients who are looking for a longer term solution may consider a similar procedure called Silhouette InstaLift, which relies on a different type of sub dermal suture to achieve results. Your California Skin Institute provider can discuss the pros and cons of each treatment during your consultation.
What to Expect During NovaThreads Treatment
Your provider will use tiny needles to guide the sutures into place under the skin. Only local anesthetic is used and there are no visible side effects after the treatment. A typical NovaThreads treatment is quite fast and can even be performed on your lunch break.
This is an outpatient procedure, which makes it very convenient and reduces chances of side effects commonly associated with surgical treatments like a face lift or a neck lift.
Does NovaThreads Hurt?
Because California Skin Institute providers use very small needles and apply local anesthetic, the discomfort from the procedure is minimal.
Does NovaThreads Leave Scars?
The incisions are made using needles, which means any resulting scars will be very difficult to see. Further, any marks will heal and fade quickly.
Is NovaThreads Limited to Face Treatments?
Although this procedure is commonly used to create a rejuvenating effect in the face, NovaThreads can also be used on other parts of the body, such as the abdomen, arms and legs.
