Dysport®

Dysport® is an injectable wrinkle treatment offered by California Skin Institute for patients dealing with frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles. This treatment is made with diluted doses of refined Botulinum toxinA, which is a muscle relaxant that prevents neuron activity to targeted areas. When injected properly by a trained provider, Dysport can dramatically reduce the appearance of wrinkles without affecting your ability to make facial expressions. The providers at California Skin Institute are highly trained to administer these injections correctly, to achieve outcomes that look natural.

What is Dysport®?

Dysport® is an injectable facial treatment that works to ease the appearance of skin creases caused by muscle movements. This injectable was approved for use in the United States by the FDA in 2009. However, it had been used in several European countries for a number of years before the U.S. approval, with great success rates.

In many ways, Dysport® is very similar to Botox®, the original Botulinum toxin A treatment for wrinkles. However, recent studies have indicated that it may be more effective for certain types of wrinkles, like crow’s feet.

How Dysport® Works

Dysport® minimizes the appearance of facial wrinkles that are caused by repetitive muscle movements. These include forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet and frown lines (the wrinkles between your eyebrows which can make you look perpetually angry).

The Botulinum toxin A in Dysport® temporarily relaxes the muscles responsible for these wrinkles, to create a smoother appearance of the skin in the treatment area.

It’s important to note that when this treatment is performed properly, your appearance will look natural, without hampering your ability to make facial expressions. The unnatural appearance occurs only when the injections are performed by an inexperienced provider, who accidentally relaxes the wrong muscle groups.

At California Skin Institute, all providers who administer injections undergo extensive training to carefully identify the correct muscle groups. We place significant emphasis on providing outcomes that look natural.

What Dysport® Treats

Dysport® treats wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements, like crow’s feet and frown lines. Over the years, these creases can become highly visible, giving you an appearance that can be mistaken for being tired or angry.

However, it’s important to note that Dysport® cannot treat other types of wrinkles, which develop strictly due to loss of skin elasticity of loss of fatty tissue beneath the skin. It is not a dermal filler, and does not provide any volume under the skin or help rebuild collagen. If you’re looking for dermal fillers to increase volume, Restylane, Juvederm Voluma or Perlane may be better options.

Dysport® vs. Botox®

Because both of these injectables are formulated around Botulinum toxin A, it is common for patients to be intrigued by the difference of Dysport® vs. Botox®.

As both of these treatments were created around the same principle, they target wrinkles in very similar ways. However, their chemical formulations are somewhat different, which can lead to different outcomes. For example, in some studies, it has been shown that Dysport® may reduce crow’s feet more effectively than Botox®. Further studies are ongoing.

If you’d like to know more about the difference of Botox® vs. Dysport® in your situation, your California Skin Institute provider will discuss the pros and cons of each treatment for your unique needs.

How Long Does Dysport® Last?

Outcomes will typically appear within 7 days after treatment, and will last between 3-6 months.1In some cases, the outcomes can last longer if additional booster treatments are performed for maintenance purposes.

What to Expect During Dysport® Treatment

During your consultation, your California Skin Institute provider will use a very small needle to make injections around the treatment area. This will be done with a high degree of expertise, to ensure that only the right muscle groups are targeted.

Because the needles are so small, there will not be much evidence left after treatment, and you’ll be able to go back to work right after.
