Labiaplasty and Vaginal Rejuvenation
Labia minora reduction surgery, or labiaplasty, is a remodeling of the enlarged inner lips of the vulva.* The enlargement of the labia minora may occur for several reasons. Some patients who visit California Skin Institute for a labiaplasty are seeking to correct problems that have been present from childhood.* More commonly, patients have experienced changes in the size and shape of labia minora as a result of childbirth, age or infection. Regardless of the cause, these anatomical changes can affect how a woman feels about herself, enjoyment of intercourse, and intimacy. More than that, a labiaplasty is sometimes sought out by patients because the labia minora has increased in size to the point that it has become uncomfortable to wear clothing or perform athletic activities.*
How is a Labiaplasty Performed?
The goal of labiaplasty surgery is to remove excess skin and improve the shape of the labia minora to create a balanced appearance.* This operation requires great skill and precision by the surgeon to ensure that the final outcome is aesthetically pleasing and comfortable for the patient.* Therefore, California Skin Institute doctors take great care to carefully remove excess skin and mucosa in a way that significantly reduces the appearance of the scar afterwards.*
Labiaplasty procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, and may sometimes require mild sedation.* However, general anesthesia is rarely needed for this surgery.*
To achieve minimal scarring, your doctor will first assess the shape and the amount of excess tissue, and will then make the incision in a way that will create a natural look for the labia minora once the excess tissue has been removed and the incision has healed.*
Further, your California Skin Institute surgeon will perform the tissue reduction in a manner that balances the right and left sides, to create an appearance that is aesthetically pleasing.*
In some cases, the surgeon may also need to address thickened skin over the clitoris, which may interfere with stimulation and decrease sensitivity. In such cases, the labiaplasty may be combined with a clitoral hood reduction (removal of the skin excess around the clitoris).* When performed as part of a labiaplasty, clitoral hood reduction can improve sensitivity and enjoyment of intercourse.*
Labiaplasty vs. Vaginoplasty
In addition to a labiaplasty, your California Skin Institute surgeon can also perform a vaginoplasty.* Childbirth, pregnancy, weight changes and aging can cause the vaginal muscles and tissue to become relaxed, stretched, torn, and even protrude from the vaginal opening. A vaginoplasty is a surgical technique used to tighten the vaginal muscles, and can be combined with a labiaplasty in one procedure.*
During a vaginoplasty, your California Skin Institute surgeon will make an incision in the perineum (the area between the vaginal opening and the anus). Through this small incision, the surgeon can remove excess skin and tissues, tighten the length of the vaginal canal, and reduce the size of the vaginal opening.* When you visit us for a consultation, your doctor will discuss this technique with you in detail and how it applies to your situation, so that you can make an informed decision about whether a vaginoplasty is right for you.*
Full labiaplasty recovery will occur after several weeks, and the pain and discomfort are typically minimal after surgery.* However, it is important to avoid intercourse for several weeks after the procedure, with specific aftercare guidance issued by your provider, to ensure proper healing.* Patients who opt for a vaginoplasty in addition to the labiaplasty may need to delay normal intercourse for several months, so that the vaginal muscles can fully heal from the surgery.*
