PinPointe FootLaser®

PinPointe FootLaser®, California Skin Skin Insititute

How does the laser work?

The PinPointe FootLaser was designed to kill the fungus that lives in and under the toenail or fingernail.* The laser light passes through the toenail without causing damage to the nail or the surrounding skin.* At the time of the procedure, the toenail will not become instantly clear, it takes time to grow out.* Just like the oral antifungal medications, response is measured in the following months as the nail grows out clear.*

How does the laser compare to the oral medication Lamisil?

The laser has a higher cure rate than Lamisil based on studies submitted to the FDA.* Unlike the oral medication, the laser does not require blood testing, has no interactions with any medications, and has no risk of liver toxicity or allergic reactions.*

What can I expect at California Skin Institute’s Offices?

An initial visit for an physical exam and discussion of treatment options. If nail fungus infection is confirmed, the laser procedure will be performed on all ten nails as well as scheduling of follow-up visits prescribed by your doctor. Thick or very infected nails may require one or more treatments to gain clearance.* Additional treatments have discounted fees within the first year.

Is the procedure painful?

Most people feel no pain. Some people feel a warming sensation and very few feel a pinprick.*

Is there a recovery period?

No. Just walk in and walk out.

How long does the procedure take?

The FootLaser procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes.*

Will the fungus come back?

There is a chance of reinfection because the fungus is present everywhere in the environment.* Your doctor will recommend a topical antifungal medication to apply weekly to reduce the chance of reinfection.*

When can I paint my nails or have a pedicure?

You can apply polish immediately after the treatment. It is important to remove all nail polish and nail decorations the day before your treatment.

How do I pay for the treatment?

Credit cards, cash, money orders are all accepted. You may also use your Medical IRA, Health Savings or Flexible Spending Account.

Is this covered by my insurance?

If you have a Health Savings Account or Medical IRA, 100% of the cost may be covered.* This procedure is considered aesthetic and therefore health insurance plans do not provide coverage.

Who developed this laser procedure?

Leading scientists and medical professionals working together for 20 years with funding provided by the National Institutes of Health developed the technology in the patented PinPointe FootLaser.

Is it FDA cleared?

The PinPointe laser is FDA-cleared as a laser for use in dermatology and plastic surgery. The use of the PinPointe laser for treatment of nail fungus (onychomycosis)** was cleared by the FDA on October 25, 2010.
